October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, where each year advocates, survivors, allies, and educators aim to start conversations about what domestic violence is, it’s impact on survivors, and everyone’s role in prevention looks like. The SHAPE Office is collaborating with many campus departments and student organizers to engage in these conversations and highlight supportive resources this October. We hope you’ll join us on this journey to learn about resources, raise awareness, and imagine what building a world where everyone has access to loving, meaningful relationships if they so choose.

Week 1: September 27th – October 3rd

- October 3rd – Self-Care Saturday: Self-Care & Anti-Racist Work. As we start our Self-Care Saturday series, we’d like to highlight this article on intersections of self-care and anti-racist work. For white people in particular, self-care, does not mean disengaging. It involves engaging deeply and reflecting on how best to be engaging in anti-racist work daily. For BIPOC folks, self-care is a survival strategy in a world structured to center white mental health. Honoring this difference and committing to anti-racist practices are critical. - October 7th – Resource Share: Barriers survivors in Muslim communities face. Listen to and read this NPR Article outlining many of the barriers faced by Muslim women navigating experiences of domestic violence. CW: domestic violence, survivor’s testimony.
- October 8th – Podcast Release: “Just Break Up.” Check out this series talking about loving relationships, and breakups. We’re particularly loving an episode called “You Are Whole, Even As You Become” focused on dating racists, not getting off, and being a perfectionist dating a perfectionist.
- October 9th – Making Connections: Growing & Nurturing Relationships, @ 12:30 – 1:30 pm. - October 10th – Self-Care Saturday: Sexual Liberation & Healing Reflection. The Black Women’s Health Initiative (@blkwomenshealth on Instagram) highlighted questions offered by Ev’Yan Whitney (@evyanwhitney), to reflect on what healing and sexual liberation can look like. We invite folks to take time to sit with these questions, let them settle into your body, and process answers through movement, dance, journaling, or other restorative ways of channeling this energy. “What stories do I have about my sexuality that keep me from feeling free? Where did I learn those stories? Who did I learn them from? Did I choose them? Am I ready to embrace a new story that empowers my sexuality, starting now?”

- Success@Wes Training – “Holding Space: Supporting Survivors of Interpersonal Violence” @ 3 – 4 pm. This interactive workshop will help faculty and staff feel more prepared to respond to disclosures from survivors of interpersonal violence, whether students, faculty, staff or others in our lives. - October 14th – Resource Share: What does a loving relationship look like, during a pandemic? Stay tuned for an infographic outlining some tips for navigating relationships in a pandemic, as well as risk reduction techniques for safety.
